About us

Prep first, pretty second

We are a Naperville tile crew. We do the work with our own hands, we answer our own phone, and we live in the same weather your house does.

Our approach

Prep first, pretty second

Every job we take runs on the same order of operations. Look at what is there. Fix what is under it. Then set tile. That sounds obvious until you see how often it gets reversed by someone trying to hit a low number. Tile is only as good as the surface it sits on, so we spend the first day or two on things you will never see again. Screwing down a subfloor that squeaks. Flattening a dip near a doorway. Sloping a shower pan so water actually reaches the drain. Sealing a corner properly instead of trusting the grout to do a job grout cannot do. When we finally start setting tile, the hard part is already handled and the finished surface simply follows. People sometimes ask why the prep takes longer than the tiling. That question has the whole trade in it.

We work in Naperville and the towns around it, so the housing stock is familiar to us. The older homes near the Historic District have plaster, thick mortar beds, and framing that was never meant for the tile people want today. The subdivisions that filled in along Route 59 and Book Road through the eighties and nineties have long floor spans and builder grade installs that are hitting the end of their run. Newer construction out toward the edges of town has its own quirks, mostly around how fast it went up. Knowing which era a house comes from tells us what we will probably find behind the wall before we open it. That is not a guess we make from a website. It is what we see week after week in this town, in bathrooms that all started the same way and aged differently.

We keep the crew small on purpose. The person who comes to look at your bathroom is the person who sets the tile, which means nothing gets lost between a salesperson and a laborer. You are not explaining your job twice. It also means we take fewer jobs at once than a larger outfit, and our calendar fills a few weeks out in busy stretches. We would rather tell you the real date than promise Monday and show up three weeks later. If we are booked past what your timeline allows, we say so on the first call and you are free to keep looking. Nobody wins when a crew overbooks and rushes a wet room. A shower built in a hurry looks fine for one season and then starts telling on itself.

Materials get chosen together, out loud, with reasons. We will tell you where a porcelain makes more sense than a natural stone in a house with kids and a dog. We will tell you when a fashionable tile is going to be miserable to keep clean in a shower fed by hard water. We do not push anyone toward the priciest option in the store, and we do not quietly swap in something cheaper than what you picked. If a material has a downside, you hear the downside first. That is the whole ethic here. You should know exactly what you are getting before it is stuck to your wall with mortar, because tile is the one finish in a house that nobody changes on a whim.

Why people call us back

The parts worth telling a neighbor about

Most of our work comes from people who already used us or who heard about us from a neighbor. That shapes how we behave on a job site. A crew chasing one job at a time can afford to cut a corner. A crew that expects to be back on the same street next year cannot. So we clean up every evening, we keep the dust where it belongs, and we do not leave a room half finished to chase a bigger job across town. If something goes sideways, and once in a while it does, we come back and deal with it instead of getting hard to reach. That is not a marketing angle. It is the only way this works over time in a town where people talk to each other at the soccer field.

We also tell people no. If a project is outside what we do well, or the plan and the budget do not line up, or the house needs a plumber before it needs a tile setter, we say it out loud. Sending someone down the wrong road wastes their money and our name at the same time. Homeowners are usually relieved to hear a straight answer, even a disappointing one. What frustrates people is vagueness, a number that keeps shifting, and a schedule that quietly slides a week at a time. We try hard not to be that. A clear scope, real dates, and a phone that gets answered will beat a slick pitch every single time, and it holds up long after the pitch is forgotten.

The last thing worth saying is that we care how a room feels when we leave it. Grout lines that run straight across a doorway. A cut at the tub that looks intentional rather than forced. Edges finished so nothing catches a towel or a bare foot. Nobody notices those details on purpose, but everybody notices when they are missing. Our measure of a good job is that six months later you are not thinking about your tile at all. It just works, it wipes clean, and the room does what it should on a Tuesday morning when the whole family is trying to get out the door. That is the standard we hold ourselves to in every house we walk into around here.
